It can be argued that in the 1920s and 30s the British railways network was in its heyday. Small locomotives were used with some of the railway companies more mature rolling stock on small branch lines and because of their age and in some cases dishevelled appearance, it is more than likely that at least one of these trains would have been nick named Old Smoky!
